Image It is a delight to have yet another sibling from the Shields family on internship! Alyse is the youngest of five children –her brother, Chris, and her sister, Sierra, participated in prior internships. Alyse hopes this experience in Africa matures her mentally and spiritually as she gets to know the Basoga people and their way of life. And through this maturity, she wants to become less aware of herself, and more aware of others. Alyse grew up in Chicago and is studying social work at Rochester College, with the hope that this will prepare her to help the children she encounters in life.

Top ten reasons how I know I am in Africa

1.  "There are black people everywhere"

2. I wake up to the sound of chikens bauching? (not sure if that is how

you say it) : )

3. People dominate the street instead of cars.

4. I go outside and their are palm trees in the backyard.

5. I can see the Nile almost everyday.

6. Baptisms do not take place in a baptismal, they take place in the River

Nile.

7. The roads are more like rollercoasters than streets and they actually

make the trip longer.

8. I got to watch a man milk a cow and then I got to drink that very milk

in tea form a few hours later.

9. I have had chi more times than I can count.

10. At night when I look up at the sky I can actually see the stars.

Oh, and one more thing. I cannot watch SYTYCD with my family!

Preschool Teacher/Director
Hey Miss Alyse!
I missed seeing you off before you left Michigan...I am so excited for all the experiences you're having in Uganda! I know all the children are drawn to you (just like at the preschool). You keep loving them all and hugging them and showing them who Jesus is through you! I look forward to our race at the end of August...you are still doing it, yes?
Take care and have fun!

SYTYCD
Alyse, Courtney's family is addicted to SYTYCD too! They are down to the top 10 now and we like them all. Our prediction is Will and Katee as the top 2. We shall see. Hope you enjoyed the pierogies that Courtney made today - can you imagine making 200 of them at once? We continue to pray for you and the entire team - especially this week-end when you will go to the villages. Take care and God Bless you.
