ImageMany of you know about Baby Rebecca.  She arrived at our home on September 12th…just 3 days after her birthday.  Her mother died delivering Rebecca and her twin.  The twin was still-born.  Rebecca weighed in at 1.9kilos 5 days after birth (and that weight was taken with a wet diaper).  Needless to say she was very small and we weren’t even sure she was going to survive.

With the help and prayers of many, Rebecca has done wonderful these last couple of months.  Our time with Rebecca is quickly coming to an end as we decided with her father, Lamik, that Sunday, December 4th, would be a good day for Rebecca to return home.  As Spence and I were sitting at the table talking with Lamik about when we should bring Rebecca to him, I became aware of the song that was playing off a CD I had put in earlier that day.  The song is “You Alone,” written by Jack Parker and David Crowder.  I know this song well, because it was sung during my wedding.

I remember standing with Spencer listening as our dear friends, Randy and Renee Grau, sang this song some two and half years ago.  Who would have ever imagined that the same song would be playing as Spence and I, living in Africa, try to decide when is the best time to return a newborn baby girl back to her village?   Maybe we all have theme songs--songs that follow us as we journey through this world.

thumb_PICT0419.jpgThe words to the song include: “You have given me more than I could ever have wanted and I want to give you my heart and my soul…” Since Rebecca has been with us she has stolen not only our sleep (a very dear commodity), but also our hearts.  Having a good idea of the conditions of the home Rebecca is headed into (dirt floors, no electricity or running water, no mother), I’m constantly reminding myself that God loves this baby girl so much more than I could ever imagine.  From the song mentioned above, my heart sings that He “alone [is] Father”, He “alone [is] good,” He “alone [is] Savior”, and He “alone [is] God.”  Trusting God is so much easier said than done, but maybe when we walk in faith…that is the time when God shows us how we truly can put our trust in him.

Spence and I want to thank all of you who have devoted time to prayer on behalf of Rebecca.  We also are so grateful for the emails of encouragement, the packages of baby supplies, and all the love that was showered on Rebecca from across the world. You are the ones we remember as the words from the song come saying, “You have given me more than I could ever have wanted…” Thank you so much.  We love you dearly.

I am so thankful for all you have done for Rebecca and her family. I know it must be really hard to let her go.
It was neat to see a picture of you on the porch of your house with a dog! I hope you like the new place. There are many good memories there for the Jinja team!
I looked for your phone number online but I couldn't find it. Send it to me so I can call you over Christmas break!!
Love,
Sara

Hey guys....So good to see the pics of Rebecca. I haven't been on this site in a while and I was amazed at how big she has gotten. I love the double chin and the full cheeks. Looks like she is a healthy girl. I can't imagine how you two felt handing her back over to her father, but I know that you will all be better for the time you spent together. What an amazing experience for you to have the opportunity to love this little girl.
Hope all is well with you and I miss you guys. Can't wait for you to visit!
Have a Merry Christmas!

Two shining stars
Spence & Emily,
I read your last message with mixed feelings. i am so thankful that God allowed y'all to be there to help Rebecca make it this far in the world. I am so happy that you had this time with her and yet so sad that this time has come to an end. I know that your relationship with Rebecca and Lamik will continue to be a blessing, not only to you four but also all of the people who know all 4 of you.
We love you two so much.

Spence and Emily,

I loved the pictures of Rebecca. She was in very good hands. I have been praying for you all constantly. I know it was hard to let her go, but you have made such a wonderful difference in her life and you will always be in her heart, as she will be in yours. She looks like a happy girl.
We love you.
